Summer Science: Play With Gravity!

Summer is the perfect time to explore and learn fun new things about the world around us. Take advantage of the longer days and (hopefully!) more free time to get outside with the kids in your life and celebrate science!

I'm thankful that I'm not floating around in outerspace, aren't you? We can all thank gravity for that. Have some fun with your kids this week playing with gravity. Gather as many different types of objects (preferably not breakable!) and drop them from as high as you are comfortable with (out of a window, using a ladder, over a landscape wall, over a railing, etc.). Talk about gravity and what makes some items fall faster than others. Kids love dropping/throwing things, so let them go hog wild!

To help explain the concept of gravity to younger kids, check out these great books from the library:

"Gravity" by Jason Chin--This is the best book I've ever encountered at explaining a tough concept to young readers. Each page has only a handful of words, and the beautiful illustrations perfectly enhance what Jason Chin is conveying. It's a book the whole family will enjoy.

"I Fall Down" by Vicki Cobb--For additional fun ideas, pick this book up. Vicki Cobb also explains gravity well, and backs it up with projects and ideas to try at home.

Go forth and discover!
