It is no secret that I love winter. Having lived in the north woods, I welcome the advent of frosty breath, wool sweaters, and ice scrapers. One sure sign of winter up north is the placement of the ice fishing huts on frozen lakes. While we don't generally have thick enough ice for ice fishing in St. Louis, you can still experience the culture and wonder of it all through Deborah Jo Larson's new book "One Frozen Lake."
In "One Frozen Lake," a little boy and his grandpa head out to the lake, drill a hole, and wait. They build a canvas hut and wait. They share hot cocoa with friends and wait. The sun sets and no fish. They play cards and wait. Until finally, a bite! And a sweet ending. The illustrations are so warm and inviting, with lots of plaids and bright colors, and the loving relationship between grandson and grandfather tops it all off as the perfect cozy read. Appropriate for ages 3-7, or fishing lovers of all ages.
