With both Spring and National Poetry Month in full swing, I couldn't wait to tell you about Marilyn Singer's newest collection of poetry. If you've read her innovative book "Mirror Mirror: A Book of Reversible Verse," then you're probably already a fan. Singer has once again produced a winner with her latest work, "A Stick is an Excellent Thing." In this homage to outdoor play, the author whimsically celebrates simple childhood pleasures such as dangling upside down by the knees, playing in a sprinkler, and making vile "soups" from inedible ingredients. Illustrator LeUyen Pham populates the idyllic urban setting with a diverse cast of impish children in her signature, vintage-influenced style. This is a book you'll really enjoy sharing as a family, so gather up the kids for a great read-aloud. But, if they're outside playing... maybe it can wait.
