Green Days

Now that we are into spring time let’s celebrate being green. ‘Tutu Goes Green’ by Tulani Thomas is a great book for teaching the three principals of conservation recycle, reuse, and reduce. For Tutu conservation is just part of her life. Whether she is at school recycling her notebooks, with her mother reusing the cloth tote bags at the market, or reducing her use of electricity by turning off her bedroom light. The illustrations, drawn by Seitu Haydrn, are large, colorful and bright. They beautifully convey the concepts expressed in the story.
Miss Fox’s Class Goes Green’ by Eileen Spinelli is fun and humorous. Miss Fox comes to school one day riding her bicycle. Causing her students to wonder if her car to broken down. To their surprise Miss Fox is going green to keep the “earth healthy” and her students want to help. Mouse decides to take shorter showers, bear turns off the TV and lights, the class has a toy swap and the principal even gets into the act by riding his bike to school. Anne Kennedy the illustrator has even designed end pages with helpful tips to go green.
