The news of the passing of Maurice Sendak saddened the
children’s book world today. Sendak sure knew how to speak to the kid in all of
us. And it seems that many of us had our own favorites:
"Chicken Soup with Rice": I think my first
exposure to this book was through Carole King's performance from her "ReallyRosie" album. She sings Sendak's words in a rollicking song that I still
find myself humming on a regular basis. Though I love Sendak's darker
works, this one is a favorite for all of its fun, absurdity, and the touch of
signature Sendak subversiveness. After all, you thought chicken soup with rice

When my son was in first grade, his teacher
gave him "Chicken Soup with Rice" for Christmas. He treasured
it, and we read it every night for months (no pun intended). It was a
great example of what a treasure books are and what wonderful gifts.—Mary-Carol,

"In The Night Kitchen" is a beautiful, imaginative book. Stylistically similar to a
comic book, the narrative and word bubbles meld into the pictures so naturally.
