Boys Club Fun!

Every other month, on the last Saturday of the month, boys aged 8-11 meet at Headquarters to have some fun. In April, we created a popsicle stick chain reaction, working together to create a long line of potential energy, then releasing it into a chain reaction of kenetic energy. It was spectacular to watch. Join us on June 27 for a LEGO city construction project! 

Don't worry ladies, there's a Girl's Club for you! On May 30 we'll be building catapults and having target practice! Check the events page to sign up.

Kindergarten Ready

Are you ready for kindergarten? Headquarters has an interactive and fun program just for you!  Through songs, games and activities we will work on things like motor skills, following directions and letter awareness. 

This month, we worked on counting and the important concept of one-to-one correspondence.   Numbers have a meaning; they represent something.  Counting to five is much different than counting out five apples.  We sang Way Up High in the Apple Tree, played a roll-and-cover dice game, and followed a recipe to make our own apple cinnamon play dough.  Bring your preschooler next month when we focus on another skill for kindergarten readiness.  We meet the last Wednesday of each month at 1:00 or 6:00 at Headquarters in the Auditorium.

Spine Poetry at Headquarters

In honor of National Poetry Month, we've had a four-session poetry workshop at Headquarters which finished with creating spine poetry. If this is new to you, a spine poem is created by using book titles. It's particularly suited to the library as we have so many books in one place, and it's tons of fun for everyone. Incredible Leonardo DaVinci

Leonardo DaVinci was an incredible scientist, artist and inventor. Did you know he invented the first tank? The first bicycle? He was definitely a man ahead of his time.

The St. Louis County Library is pleased to be a sponsor of the DaVinci Exhibit that is currently showing in downtown St. Louis. We will be partnering with the DaVinci Exhibit by offering programs for students and adults.

All St. Louis County Library branches will be presenting a hands-on program for students ages 8-12. It is a great way for kids to learn about DaVinci’s life and inventions.

The curator of the exhibit will also give a compact lecture on DaVinci’s life and legacy at the Florissant Valley, Daniel Boone, Headquarters and Tesson Ferry branches. Please visit our website for more information.

For Me, For You, For Later

It is never too early to start talking with kids about money. Financial literacy should start early and involve the whole family. This is why St. Louis County Library is pleased to be working with PNC on their PNC Grow Up Great initiative For Me, for You, for Later.

For Me, for You, for Later offers resources to parents and caregivers that get preschoolers started learning about money and saving. St. Louis County Library will be offering Storytime: For Me, For You, For Later at our branches during September and October. The program is a fun, interactive way for kids to start learning about money. Every child that attends will take home a free book and activity kit.

By the way, there is a free mobile app called "Achieve it with Sesame Street" available from ITunes and Android. Search either "PNC" or "Sesame Street" to get it.

A fun and creative way to save money this holiday is to make your own gifts. We have great books to help you let out your child's inner artist. Thornhill Branch is hosting a Make Your Own Holiday Gifts program on November 19th, 10:00 a.m. Sign up early to ensure a spot.
