One of the best ways to celebrate National Poetry Month is to enjoy and share the 2009 Caldecott Honor book, “A River of Words: The Story of William Carlos Williams”, written by Jen Bryant and illustrated by Melissa Sweet. This children’s picture book biography tells the story of well known American poet, William Carlos Williams in a delightful manner that will appeal to readers of all ages. Born in Rutherford, New Jersey in 1883, William Carlos Williams wrote poetry that presents the ordinary with beauty and emotion. “A River of Words” was praised by the Caldecott committee in this way: “Sweet's mixed-media collage and primitive watercolors flow seamlessly with Bryant's prose to reveal the important bits and pieces of Williams' ordinary, yet extraordinary, life as a doctor and poet.” I hope that you’ll enjoy reading “A River of Words” and the samples of Williams’ poetry that you’ll find throughout the illustrations and endpapers.
